Welcome to another installment of This Week in Spring! I was in London, last week, for Devoxx UK. The show was a rousing success all around. I gave a talk, a workshop, and was delighted to participate in the closing keynote, too! This week I'm in Kraków, Poland, for Devoxx Poland (né 33rd Degree) which seems to be an amazing success as well! • Spring 5 moving up to Java 8+
• Massive adoption of Spring 4 and Java 8
• http://start.spring.io/ defaulting to Java 8 as the version of choice
• Spring Boot's 1.3.0.M1 reference docs recommending new apps start at Java 8.

Okay, those last two aren't articles, but were instead driven by the the rapid adoption of Java 8. Java 8 has been picked up by the development community FAST. Here on the Spring team, we believe strongly in adopting Java 8 for new applications. Spring Boot 1.3 will ship with a brand new module called spring-boot-devtools. The aim of this module is to try and improve the development-time experience when working on Spring Boot applications.

To use the module you simply need to add it as a dependency in your Maven POM:

A common question when developing streaming applications is, “How many events per second can you process?”. The primary purpose of this blog post is to answer that question without falling into the classic benchmarking conundrum of benchmarking versus "benchmarketing". Over the past year, we have significantly improved the cache abstraction, with support of JSR-107 (JCache) annotations and a better declarative model to share or externalize common settings. In Spring Boot 1.3, we now offer a comprehensive auto-configuration for it.

In a nutshell, the cache abstraction applies caching to methods, thus reducing the number of executions based on the information available in the cache. The caching logic is applied transparently: the method below will only be invoked if the specified ISBN is not already present in the books cache.
